We are about to embark on another adventure. Our goal, eventually, it to have three dogs. We already have the magnificent Mr. Spock, and someday he will be joined with a sweet little chow girl, but the immediate plan is for our "little" dog who will grow up with Spock. We have contacted a rescue group that works with Japanese Chin and Pekingese. We are waiting to see (and we are told it will be soon) exactly who the special dog will be. We will keep you posted and show photos on this news page.
There are so many chows and other breeds out there now, looking for homes. Each has its own special spirit ready to share a home with a loving human. The big problem is that there are so many more dogs out there than we can find homes for, Shelters are bulging at the seams, dog are being killed as they take up badly needed space for more dogs, one of whom may be adoptable.
Fighting against this never ending tide of dogs looking for homes are dedicated rescuers, using their own funds to try to find a home, pay the vet, feed and love that dog they have rescued. They carry the burden of knowing the faces of the ones they couldn't save.
So, what can you do?
You can contact your political representatives and have them take action against commercial puppy operations and or puppy mills. Commercial enterprises should have to pay huge taxes on their income from the sale of puppies. Those taxes should be used to help shelters and rescue groups continue to save lives. That will take a letter.
You can open your home to a rescued dog or cat. That would reduce the numbers out there and make sure you spay and neuter all animals that are not part of a kennel breeding program (for the show ring).
Visit Petfinder.com on line. Enter your information and check all the various rescue groups in your area, or that deal with the breed of your choice. Now and again, when you can, send a small donation. Even ten dollars will buy a leash, some worm medication, or even shampoo. There is no amount too small and it all helps. You can also visit our links page for links to chow rescue, and contact national breed clubs for more information.
